About the Forum

The State School Teachers’ Union WA (SSTUWA) continues to provide early childhood educators with opportunities to develop effective industrial and professional practice, understandings and knowledge. This forum will address developing intellectual engagement, rigorous thinking and children’s agency through Inquiry in a play-driven learning space. 

The Presentation

Beginning Your Inquiry: How to Get Started will introduce ECE participants to the essential elements that have been found to underpin quality inquiry pedagogies. 

Rebecca's presentation will feature stories of practice captured in diverse Western Australian settings, providing illustrations of powerful cultures of inquiry that harness children's innate attitudes of curiosity and research.  The case studies highlight pedagogies that emphasize reciprocal relationships, deep learning, intellectual engagement, rigorous thinking and children's agency.

Come together as insights are shared into the genesis of various inquiry-based projects, offering possibilities for embarking on your own journeys of inquiry alongside children. 

About Rebecca Duncan

An early childhood consultant for the Association of Independent Schools of WA (AISWA) since 2010, Rebecca is a passionate advocate for quality pedagogical practices in which young children flourish.

Prior to joining AISWA, Rebecca had extensive experience as a classroom educator, during which she received a National Excellence in Teaching Award (NEiTA WA).

Throughout her time at AISWA, Rebecca has lead many exciting initiatives to support educators and leaders, including the development of a variety of professional learning opportunities, projects and acclaimed teacher resource publications.

Rebecca’s writing for AISWA includes the ‘Early Years Learning Framework: In Action’, ‘Playing with the Australian Curriculum: Meeting the Standards through Play-based Pedagogies’ and ‘Journeys of Inquiry’. The success of ‘Journeys of Inquiry’ was a catalyst for AISWA’s recent publication of Rebecca’s accompanying second volume of inspiring stories of inquiry pedagogies, ‘Further Journeys of Inquiry’.

Trade union training leave - Schools

Members in schools and TAFE colleges are eligible for five days of paid leave per year to attend trade union training (TUT).

To comply with TUT leave requirements applicants must:

• Submit applications to DoE/principal four weeks prior to the event.
• Provide DoE/principal with a printed copy of the course program attached to this form.
• Be nominated by the SSTUWA. See “nominated audience” on the attached course program.

The school will not be charged for the salary of the person attending trade union training - this is covered by the DoE.  However, if a relief teacher is required, this is funded through the school's one line budget.

For school administration
When processing TUT leave applications:

• Ensure staff attending training have selected TUT Leave in HRMIS.
• Project code 1471 will be generated within the payment system.
