Late last year we were contacted by members affected by smoke penetrating school sites, from nearby bushfires but not in evacuation zone, who were suffering from the hazardous effects of this pollution.
The decision on whether schools should remain open in these circumstances was left to the Principal to decide with no specified guidance or criteria for consideration.
The ACTU in the aftermath of the bushfire catastrophe have produced some excellent guidance on managing the health effects of bushfire smoke haze and managing workplaces affected. Read the ACTU Work Health and Safety Alert and Advice here.
We wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. We wish to pay respect to their Elders - past, present and future - and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within Australia. We stand in solidarity.
