The State School Teachers Union has warned teaching jobs at Central Midlands High School could be lost if the State Government forges ahead with the closure of Moora Residential College.
Union members will join teachers, parents and students at a rally today to protest against the State Government’s announcement to close the college.
SSTUWA President Pat Byrne said, the total loss of funding from the school, for 30 students, could reach $350,000, or the equivalent of three teaching wages.
“We’re concerned the funding cuts will mean the high school could be downgraded to a district high school,” Ms Byrne said.
“Not only could the school lose three teaching positions but education assistants jobs could go, as well as the variety of courses offered, which could cut another five jobs.
“The decision by the Premier and Education Minister to close this college is short sighted and will have a negative impact on the school community and wider community for decades to come.
“The college is a home away from home for students from all over the State who attend Central Midlands Senior High School and we urge the Minister to rethink her decision.
“The SSTUWA believes all children must have access to quality education provision, no matter where they come from and closing this college will deny children access to that education in our rural areas.
“We are disappointed that this Government promised so much and has instead decided to take away from students in rural communities,” she said.
