Thank you to all our school leader and teacher members who contributed to our 2016 Australian Curriculum survey.
The SSTUWA has used this information to negotiate with the Department of Education (DoE) for greater curriculum support and professional development – in particular for Humanities and Social Sciences (HASS), Health and Physical Education teachers and school leaders in 2017.
Members told us that they required further support and training to implement all phases of the WA Curriculum.
Over three-quarters (76 per cent) of respondents to our 2016 survey did not feel that the support and training provided to familiarise and implement phase one curriculum subjects was adequate, and 50 per cent of respondents were receiving no additional support to familiarise themselves with phases two and three of the curriculum.
Four out of five (80 per cent) of respondents also highlighted the need for face-to-face contact as the most preferred method of professional development.
We encourage members to take advantage of these opportunities to engage in this professional development being offered through DoE’s State Wide Services.
It is by no means random happenstance that DoE provides support. Collecting information through our surveys, school visits and through your conversations with your union reps, district organisers and SSTUWA staff are vital and valuable and ensure that your rights and entitlements are maintained or improved.
