The State School Teachers Union WA wishes to correct statements as reported in The West Australian today (20 June 2017), and clarify its position with regards the proposed new Commonwealth school funding model and legislation.
SSTUWA President Pat Byrne provides the following comments:
“The SSTUWA has not taken a different position from the Australian Education Union (AEU) with regards the Federal Government’s proposed school funding reforms, and are in complete agreement that the legislation in its current form should be opposed in the Federal Parliament.”
“Whilst any increase in funding for Western Australian public schools is welcomed, the SSTUWA will not support any funding model that entrenches inequity and disadvantage for any students.”
“A fair and equitable model must guarantee that all public schools across Australia are funded to their School Resourcing Standard (SRS).”
“It is the SSTUWA and AEU position that the current Federal Government’s proposed funding model entrenches inequity and disadvantage for students, and as such we do not support the legislation.”
We wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. We wish to pay respect to their Elders - past, present and future - and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within Australia. We stand in solidarity.
