At the SSTUWA State Council held on 12 and 13 November two papers were presented to provide direction for forming an SSTUWA position on important issues confronting school leaders.
The first paper was a Draft Position Paper: Reclassification in response to Clause 16.2 (General Agreement 2014) and the Shelby Report in the considerations for a new school classification system.
The paper reflects a range of processes conducted by the SSTUWA and the views of school leaders from a number of forums conducted this year.
State Council endorsed an overarching recommendation that the six recommendations that are put forward at the conclusion of the Reclassification Position Paper become the six principles that form the basis of any new classification system. Further, that the position paper is to be included in the SSTUWA EBA Framework for 2017.
The second paper was a Consultation Paper: The reintroduction of system support structures and changes to the way school improvement is managed.
This paper is a response to concerns in regards to the lack of system support raised by school leaders who attended the forums the SSTUWA conducted throughout 2016; a response to the significant findings and recommendations of the Education and Health Standing Committee IPS Inquiry; and current research on how to transform education systems to a method where the emphasis is on building capacity rather than a punitive approach to school improvement.
State Council endorsed the papers as a basis for further consultation for school leaders during the remainder of Term 4 2016 and Term 1 2017.
All school leader members are urged to read the two papers, share them with colleagues and make an effort to respond to the consultation processes the SSTUWA will conduct.
We wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. We wish to pay respect to their Elders - past, present and future - and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within Australia. We stand in solidarity.
