Even though the importation of asbestos has been banned in Australia for many years, asbestos containing materials and products are still entering the country predominantly from China and India.
The ACTU has organised a petition to urge the government to toughen the laws and improve enforcement of those laws.

Hi,
My name is Ron and I have asbestosis. I was exposed to asbestos when I worked as a bricklayer.
We banned the importation of asbestos in 2003, but everyday asbestos is being imported into Australia because business and government fail to adequately check for asbestos in imported goods. Will you sign my petition to Peter Dutton, Minister for Border Protection?
I don't want any other worker to be put in danger like I was. Brake pads. Tram Stops. Building materials. Crayons. These are a few of the imported items that were later found to contain asbestos in the last year. Australian workers were exposed to asbestos because businesses failed to check what they were bringing into Australia. Peter Dutton has launched a review but he is not letting ordinary Australians have their say on this issue.
Well, I’m not going to be silenced. I think that the Government should toughen the law to prevent asbestos being imported. Sign my petition to tell Peter Dutton that we need tough asbestos laws to protect us from imported asbestos.
Asbestos is an evil we can prevent if we all stand together and fight for what we know is right – an asbestos free Australia.
In solidarity,
Ron
PS: Watch the video of my story and share it on your social media to make as many people aware of what asbestos can do.
We wish to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we live and work. We wish to pay respect to their Elders - past, present and future - and acknowledge the important role all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play within Australia. We stand in solidarity.
