There’s bad news on the jobs front for teachers and education staff with more than 200 given the choice of accepting a payout and quitting or risk being forced out. Education Minister Peter Collier is imploring workers not to panic. Offers have been made to staff deemed surplus to requirements but the State School Teachers Union’s Pat Byrne says this doesn’t mean there isn’t work to do or work to be done. If the teachers accept the offer they will have three weeks’ pay for every year of service capped at 52 weeks.

Gary Adshead interviews SSTU President Pat Byrne about part of the NAPLAN test being marked by computers. Ms Byrne says that the essay writing part of the test is going to be marked by computer which is both a surprise to her and a retrograde step. She says the computer will pick up things favour things like grammar and spelling but will not effectively assess elements like reasoning, development of an argument and powers of persuasion. She says she is unaware that any principals have been consulted about this yet and says a computerised test one thing but computerised marking is quite another. She says the union will be resisting this move “to the hilt”.
