A radical plan to make richer families pay to educate their children at public schools has been slammed by the State Government and teachers. Perth parents are also against the idea, which would close the door on universal schooling. “We have an understanding in Australia that every child is entitled to a free, quality, public education,” the State Teachers Union’s Pat Byrne said. Among four reform options, one gives the State full responsibility for all schools, while another put the Federal Government in charge, forcing high income families to pay. Ms Byrne added “the gap between the rich and the poor will simply be exacerbated, this is not conducive to a stable society or a stable economy”.
