Welcome back to term 2 of the 2015 school year. I hope everyone has had the opportunity to have a restful break over the term 1 holidays.
I am still the principal of Derby District High School and hold the position of “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander” Executive member on the SSTUWA Executive. I am also the chair of the SSTUWA ATSIEC and the SSTUWA representative on the Federal AEU ATSIEC.
I encourage members of the SSTUWA to become a member of the 2015 ATSIEC. It is an opportunity for Aboriginal and Non Aboriginal Educators to meet and discuss Aboriginal Education matters as well as provide support to SSTUWA ATSI members in Western Australian Public Schools through our committee.
This committee also has the opportunity, via the chair of the committee, to provide information to the SSTUWA Executive and the AEU ATSI committee on union and public education matters that influence our members and the educational outcomes of Aboriginal students within our schools.
The committee is also updated on state and national issues/forums and contributes to the AEU federal ATSI committee.
The ATSIEC is supported by Bronwyn Croghan in her role as Women’s and Equity officer. Please contact Bronwyn bcroghan@sstuwa.org.au if you are interested in participating.
Committee meetings are held at the SSTUWA building.
Teleconference facilities, at no cost to members, are provided for all committee meetings. Meetings are usually planned at 4:00pm on those dates. We have first meeting in April.
2015 Committee meeting dates:
Nicole Major is the Federal Aboriginal Education Officer. She is based at the AEU Federal Office, in Melbourne. Before taking up the position with the AEU Nicole was a Country Organiser for the NSW Teachers Federation and a PD/H/PE in rural NSW secondary schools.
The Australian Education Union (AEU) has been working on developing an online forum that enables Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators from around Australia to have professional dialogue about the topics that interest them. The forum provides an opportunity to share knowledge and experiences and to post links to useful resources, media and professional development material.
The forum aims to support a network of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander educators from across Australia and to enhance their engagement and activism within the AEU.
On the forum you will find media articles from across the country, updates of current campaigns, links to research and findings and much more.
